Desert tours from Marrakech: Agafay, Zagora or Merzouga?

Updated 27 October 2026 · 6 min read · By the Agafay Desert Tour team

There are three main desert tours from Marrakech: a half-day trip to the Agafay Desert (about 40 to 60 minutes away), a 2-day trip to Zagora (about 6 to 7 hours' drive each way) and a 3-day trip to Merzouga and the big Erg Chebbi dunes (about 9 hours' drive each way). Which one is right depends mostly on how many days you have, and whether you need real sand dunes.

We're a booking service for Agafay trips only, so we don't sell Zagora or Merzouga tours. We'll still compare all three honestly, and say clearly when a longer trip is the better choice.

Agafay: the half-day desert trip

The Agafay Desert is about 30 to 40 km south-west of Marrakech, 40 to 60 minutes by road. It's a stone desert, not a sand-dune desert: pale, rolling hills and plateaus, with the High Atlas mountains on the horizon (snow-capped in winter). It is not part of the Sahara, but it looks and feels like desert, and you can fit it into a single afternoon.

The trips we offer all start with a 3:00 PM pickup in Marrakech. You do a quad, buggy or camel ride in the late-afternoon light, then dinner with a live show from around 7:00 PM, and you're usually back in Marrakech around 8:00 PM. From about October to February the sun sets while you're in the desert. Partner operators in Agafay run the activities, and you pay by cash on the day.

  • Camel Ride + Dinner & Show: a 15-minute camel ride and dinner, about 4 hours in total, from 200 MAD per person.
  • Quad + Camel + Dinner & Show: 40 minutes or 1h30 on a quad, plus a camel ride and dinner, about 5 to 6 hours, from 350 MAD.
  • Buggy + Camel + Dinner & Fire Show: a 1-hour buggy ride, a camel ride and dinner with a fire show, about 5 hours, from 1400 MAD.

Our Agafay Desert guide explains the landscape and the season in more detail.

Zagora: the 2-day trip

Zagora is a town in the Draa Valley, south of the High Atlas, roughly 350 km from Marrakech. By car it's about 6 to 7 hours each way without long stops, crossing the mountains on the Tizi n'Tichka pass, at roughly 2,200 metres, and passing Ouarzazate.

A typical 2-day Zagora tour leaves Marrakech early in the morning, stops at the old earthen village of Aït Ben Haddou, then follows the Draa Valley and its palm groves south. In the evening there's a camel ride and a night in a desert camp, and the second day is the drive back.

The honest catch: the dunes near Zagora are small. Travel guides and tour companies alike describe them as much smaller than the big dune fields of Erg Chebbi or Erg Chegaga. You get mountain scenery, kasbahs, palm groves and a night in the south, but if tall sand dunes are the dream, Zagora may disappoint.

Who it suits: people with a few days who want a taste of southern Morocco and a night in a desert camp, and who don't mind spending most of the trip on the road.

Merzouga and Erg Chebbi: the 3-day trip

Merzouga is a village at the edge of Erg Chebbi, Morocco's best-known dune field: about 28 km long and up to about 150 metres high. This is the Sahara most people picture, with big waves of orange sand. It's also far. Merzouga is roughly 550 km from Marrakech, about 9 hours' drive each way without stops, so tours usually take 3 days, breaking the journey with a night on the way.

On a typical 3-day trip, the first day crosses the High Atlas, often via Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate. The second day reaches Merzouga in the afternoon, with a camel trek into the dunes and a night in a desert camp. The third day starts early and is mostly the long drive back to Marrakech.

Who it suits: travellers with a week or more in Morocco, for whom the dunes are the highlight of the trip.

Which desert tour should you choose?

  • 3 days or less in Marrakech: choose Agafay. A Zagora or Merzouga trip would use up most of your holiday.
  • 4 to 6 days, and you want a night in the south: Zagora fits, as long as you're happy with small dunes.
  • A week or more, and sand dunes are the dream: go to Merzouga. It's the real Sahara dune experience, and worth the drive.
  • Travelling with young children: Agafay is far easier: about 2 hours or less in a vehicle in total, and back at your hotel the same night.
  • You want quad biking or buggies: Agafay is built for it, with no driving licence needed for drivers aged 16 and over.

Many visitors do both: Agafay early in their stay, and a longer Sahara tour later if they have the days. Our Agafay vs Sahara comparison goes deeper into the landscape and the trade-offs.

How much time each trip really takes

It's easy to underestimate a long desert tour. A 2-day Zagora trip means about 12 to 14 hours of driving in 2 days, plus stops. A 3-day Merzouga trip adds up to about 18 hours of driving, and longer with stops. The mountain road over the Tizi n'Tichka pass is beautiful but winding, which matters if anyone in your group gets car-sick.

An Agafay trip takes one afternoon and evening, from a 3:00 PM pickup to about 8:00 PM back in Marrakech, so your mornings stay free for the city.

When to go

All three trips are hot in summer. In Agafay, July and August afternoons are often above 35 °C, which is one reason our trips start in the late afternoon. Winter nights are cold everywhere in the desert, so bring warm layers from November to February. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable seasons for any desert trip. Our Agafay weather guide has the month-by-month detail.

FAQ

Good to know

What is the best desert tour from Marrakech?

It depends on your time. With 3 days or less in Marrakech, a half-day Agafay trip is the practical choice. With a week or more and a wish for big sand dunes, a 3-day tour to Merzouga is worth it.

Can you visit the Sahara in a day trip from Marrakech?

Not really. The big Sahara dunes at Merzouga are about 9 hours' drive away, and even Zagora is about 6 to 7 hours. The desert you can do in an afternoon from Marrakech is Agafay, a stone desert about 40 to 60 minutes away.

Is Zagora worth it compared with Merzouga?

Zagora is shorter (usually 2 days) but its dunes are small. Merzouga takes about 3 days and has the large Erg Chebbi dunes. If dunes are the main goal, Merzouga is the better choice.

How far is Merzouga from Marrakech?

Roughly 550 km, about 9 hours' drive each way without stops, crossing the High Atlas. That's why most Merzouga tours from Marrakech last 3 days.

Do you sell Zagora or Merzouga tours?

No. We're a booking service for Agafay Desert trips only: quad, buggy or camel rides with dinner and a show, from a 3:00 PM pickup in Marrakech.

Is the Agafay Desert part of the Sahara?

No. Agafay is a separate stone desert on the Marrakech side of the High Atlas, with rolling hills rather than sand dunes. The Sahara begins on the far side of the mountains.
