What is the Agafay Desert?

The Agafay Desert is a stone desert south-west of Marrakech. Instead of sand dunes, it's a landscape of bare, rounded hills, flat-topped plateaus and dry riverbeds in shades of beige, ochre and pale pink, with almost no vegetation. Its big draw is the contrast: the High Atlas stands on the horizon, snow-capped in winter, and Marrakech's medina is less than an hour away.

Agafay isn't part of the Sahara. The Sahara begins on the far side of the Atlas, 7 to 9 or more hours' drive from Marrakech. Agafay looks and feels like desert, but it's the desert you can visit in an afternoon. That's why it has become one of the most popular excursions from Marrakech, with quad and buggy rides, camel rides, desert camps and dinner shows.

Where is the Agafay Desert?

Agafay lies about 30 to 40 km south-west of Marrakech, in the Marrakech-Safi region, between the city and the foothills of the High Atlas. Its southern edge reaches the village of Lalla Takerkoust and its lake, a reservoir in the foothills. The middle of the area is at roughly 31.43° N, 8.14° W: open it on Google Maps.

"Agafay" covers a wide area rather than one point, and camps and activity bases are spread across it. If you go independently, get the exact location of where you're going before you set off.

How to get to the Agafay Desert from Marrakech

The drive takes 40 to 60 minutes. You have three options:

Things to do in the Agafay Desert

Quad biking

The most popular activity: 40 minutes or 1h30 on off-road tracks over the hills. No driving licence is needed (drivers 16+), quads are shared two per vehicle, helmets are provided, and a guide leads the group. See quad biking in Agafay.

Buggy rides

A two-seater buggy with a steering wheel, for 1 hour: you sit side by side, which many couples and parents with children prefer. See buggy rides in Agafay.

Camel rides

15 minutes for the experience and the photos, or 1 hour to settle into the rhythm. The easiest activity for children. See camel rides in Agafay.

Dinner with a show

The relaxed end of the day: a Moroccan dinner around 7:00 PM with a live show, or a fire show on the buggy trip. Vegetarian meals are possible; tell us about allergies in advance. See dinner in the Agafay Desert.

Sunset and stars

From about October to February, the sun sets while you're still in the desert, and in December and January it's dark by the end of dinner, with the first stars out away from the city lights. Camps, pools and overnight stays

Agafay has many desert camps, from simple tents to luxury lodges, some with pools and restaurants open to day visitors. They're a good choice if you want to sleep in the desert. We don't sell stays or pool passes, so book those directly with a camp.

At the southern edge of Agafay, the lake and its village make a scenic stop with the Atlas behind, if you're exploring the area by car.

How much does an Agafay Desert trip cost?

Prices across Agafay vary a lot, so compare what's actually included: the minutes of riding, shared or solo vehicles, transport and dinner. These are our current prices per person, including free pickup at your hotel or riad:

The best time to visit the Agafay Desert

Agafay or the Sahara?

They aren't really competitors. Choose Agafay if you have a few days in Marrakech and want the desert in an afternoon, back in your hotel the same night. Choose the Sahara (Merzouga or Erg Chegaga) if you have several days and tall sand dunes are the point: it's 7 to 9 or more hours' drive each way. Plenty of visitors do both. Desert camps or an afternoon trip?

A camp stay lets you watch the sunset and the stars in any season, wake up in the desert, and relax by a pool if the camp has one. It means a night away from Marrakech, and activities may cost extra.

An afternoon trip packs the activities, a camel ride and dinner into one outing, with transport, and has you back in the city around 8:00 PM. It suits short stays, families and anyone who prefers their own bed. That's what we sell; for an overnight stay, book directly with a camp.

Is the Agafay Desert worth it?

Yes, if you want wide open space, Atlas views and a ride on a quad, buggy or camel without losing days of your trip. No, if you're expecting the Sahara's sand dunes or a remote wilderness all to yourself: Agafay is a stone desert, and a popular one, with camps and other groups around. Go with the right expectations and it's one of the most memorable half-days you can have from Marrakech.

What to wear and bring

• Closed shoes and long trousers, for the stony ground and for riding.
• A scarf or buff and sunglasses against the dust. Scarves and goggles aren't provided.
• A warm layer for the evening from October to April. Winter nights can drop to around 5 °C.
• Sun cream, a hat and water. Large water bottles aren't included.
• Cash to pay for your trip on the day.

Safety and children

Agafay is a calm, popular area close to the city. On quads and buggies, every ride starts with a safety briefing and a short practice, helmets are provided, and a guide leads the group at the front and sets the pace. The activities are run by our partner operators in Agafay, with professional guides and drivers.

It's an easy desert outing for families. Children aged 3 to 15 ride quads and buggies as passengers (only 16+ can drive), camel rides suit all ages, and under-3s come free. The biggest things to plan for are the sun in summer and the cold in winter evenings.
