Is the Agafay Desert worth visiting? An honest answer before you book
Updated 25 October 2026 · 4 min read · By the Agafay Desert Tour team

Yes, the Agafay Desert is worth it if you want a taste of the desert without giving up days of your Morocco trip. In a single afternoon from Marrakech you get wide open views, the Atlas Mountains on the horizon, a quad, buggy or camel ride and dinner under the sky, and you're back in the city the same night.
It's not worth it if you're expecting the Sahara's tall orange sand dunes, or a remote, empty wilderness all to yourself. Agafay is a stone desert, and it's a popular one. We sell Agafay trips, so we're not neutral, but this guide gives you the honest picture so you can decide before you book.

What the Agafay Desert is, and what it isn't
Agafay is a stone desert about 30 to 40 km south-west of Marrakech, a 40 to 60 minute drive. Instead of sand dunes you'll find pale, rolling hills, flat-topped plateaus and dry riverbeds in shades of beige, ochre and pink, with the High Atlas standing on the skyline and Lalla Takerkoust lake nearby. In winter the mountains are often snow-capped.
What it isn't: it's not part of the Sahara, it has no dunes, and it isn't untouched. Agafay has become one of the most visited excursions from Marrakech, with desert camps spread across the hills and other groups out riding in the afternoon. If you go in knowing that, it rarely disappoints. If you go expecting Lawrence of Arabia, it will.
Why most visitors find it worth it
- It's close. You can leave Marrakech after lunch and be back the same evening. No long road trip, no night away from your hotel.
- The views are genuinely big. After the medina's narrow streets, the open space and the Atlas on the horizon feel like another country.
- There's something to do. A quad or buggy ride over the hills is properly fun, even for complete beginners, and a camel ride is a classic Moroccan moment.
- The evening is the highlight. The heat eases, the light softens and the trip ends with dinner and a show in the desert.
- It's easy with children. Short transfers, short rides and being back at your hotel the same night make it one of the easier desert outings for families.
When it might disappoint you
- You dream of dunes. Then you need the Sahara, which is 7 to 9 or more hours' drive away. Our Agafay vs Sahara guide compares the two.
- You want solitude. You'll see other riders and camps. It feels spacious, but you won't be alone.
- You hate dust. On a quad or buggy, dust comes with the territory, especially when vehicles ride in a line. A scarf over your nose and mouth and sunglasses solve most of it.
- You visit at midday in July. Summer afternoons are often above 35 °C. That's why trips leave Marrakech at 3:00 PM, once the worst heat is passing.

What to do in the Agafay Desert
An Agafay afternoon is usually built from a few simple pieces:
- Quad biking: 40 minutes or 1h30 on the tracks across the hills. See quad biking in Agafay.
- A buggy ride: 1 hour in a two-seater buggy, if you'd rather sit side by side and steer with a wheel. See buggy rides in Agafay.
- A camel ride: 15 minutes for the experience and the photos, or 1 hour to settle into the rhythm. See camel rides in Agafay.
- Dinner with a show: the relaxed end of the day. See dinner in the Agafay Desert.
- The views: the late-afternoon light over the hills is the best time for photos.
You'll also find overnight camps, hotels and pool day passes in Agafay. We don't sell those, but they exist if you want to stay longer.
Who will love it, and who should skip it
You'll love Agafay if you have a few days in Marrakech, want a change of scenery and a bit of adventure, travel with children, or simply want a memorable evening outside the city.
You might skip it if you've already planned a Sahara trip with nights in the dunes, you have very little time and would rather explore the medina, or dust and engines aren't your idea of a holiday. In that last case, the gentlest option is a camel ride and dinner, with no motor ride at all.
How to make your Agafay trip worth it
- Pick the right season. March to May and September to November are the most comfortable. Winter is lovely too if you dress warmly.
- Match the trip to your group. Want adventure? Choose the 1h30 quad option. Travelling with young children, or not keen on engines? The Camel Ride + Dinner & Show is the relaxed choice.
- Dress for the desert. Closed shoes, long trousers, a scarf and sunglasses (scarves and goggles aren't provided), plus a warm layer for the evening most of the year.
- Bring water and cash. Large water bottles aren't included, and payment is in cash on the day.
- Set your expectations. Think "beautiful open desert close to the city", not "the Sahara".
How long do you need?
An afternoon and evening. Trips leave Marrakech at 3:00 PM, dinner starts around 7:00 PM, and you're usually back in Marrakech around 8:00 PM. The total time depends on the package: about 4 hours for the camel ride and dinner, about 5 hours with a 40-minute quad or 1-hour buggy ride, and about 6 hours with the 1h30 quad and 1-hour camel ride. Pickup is free at 7 meeting points in Marrakech.
