Agafay desert camps: how to choose one, or when an afternoon trip is better
Updated 31 October 2026 · 5 min read · By the Agafay Desert Tour team

Agafay desert camps come in three main types: simple tented camps, luxury tents and lodges with private bathrooms, and day passes that give you a pool and lunch without staying the night. The right one depends on what you want from the desert: a night under canvas, a comfortable hotel-style stay, or a lazy day by a pool with a view of the Atlas.
To be clear from the start: we don't sell camp stays, hotel rooms or day passes, and we don't review individual camps. We're a booking service for Agafay afternoon trips (quad biking, a buggy or camel ride with dinner and a show). This guide explains what to look for in a camp, and when an afternoon trip might suit you better.

The types of Agafay camps and stays
The Agafay Desert is about 30 to 40 km south-west of Marrakech, 40 to 60 minutes by road, and many camps and lodges are spread across its hills. They differ a lot in comfort and style. Broadly, you'll find these options:
| Type | What you usually get | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Simple tented camp | A tent with beds, shared or basic bathrooms, dinner, often a campfire | Budget travellers, groups, people who want a simple night out |
| Luxury tents | Large tents with proper beds and a private bathroom, a restaurant, often a pool | Couples, special occasions, comfort lovers |
| Lodges and desert hotels | Rooms or suites in stone or earthen buildings, sometimes with spa services | Travellers who want hotel comfort with a desert view |
| Day pass | Pool access, loungers, usually lunch; no overnight stay | A relaxed day trip, especially in the warm months |
Names like "camp", "luxury camp" and "lodge" aren't official categories, so always read what a specific place actually includes rather than relying on the label.

What to check before booking an Agafay camp
These are the questions worth asking any camp, lodge or day-pass provider before you pay:
- Exact location. "Agafay" covers a wide area. Ask how far the camp is from Marrakech, and whether the last part is a dirt track. Look at the map, not just the photos.
- Transport. Is a transfer from Marrakech included, at what time, and from where? Is there an extra charge for a late return? Taxis aren't waiting in the desert, so you depend on the arranged transport.
- What's included. Dinner, breakfast, drinks, activities and the transfer are sometimes in the price and sometimes extra. Ask for the full list in writing.
- Bathrooms. Private bathroom inside the tent, or a shared block? It matters at night.
- Heating in winter. Desert nights in December and January can drop near 5 °C. Ask whether the tent or room is heated and how, and whether there are extra blankets.
- Cooling in summer. July and August afternoons are often above 35 °C. Ask about air conditioning or fans, and shade during the day.
- Pool season. Ask whether the pool is open on your dates and whether it's heated. In the cooler months an unheated pool can be too cold to enjoy.
- Activities. Quads, buggies and camel rides are often arranged by separate operators. Ask who runs them, how long they last, and whether helmets and a safety briefing are provided.
- Cancellation policy and reviews. Read recent reviews on independent sites and check what happens if you cancel or the weather turns.
Day passes: what they are
An Agafay day pass usually means spending the day at a camp's pool, with a lounger and often lunch, then going back to Marrakech without staying the night. It's a popular escape from the city's heat, especially from late spring to early autumn. What's included, and whether transport is part of it, varies a lot from one place to another, so check the details.
We don't sell day passes. If you'd rather spend the late afternoon doing something active, a quad, buggy or camel trip with dinner might suit you better (see below).
When an afternoon trip is the better choice
A night in a camp is lovely if that's what you want. But many people searching for an Agafay camp mainly want to see the desert, do a ride and have dinner there. For that, an afternoon trip can be the simpler choice:
- You're in Marrakech for a few days and have already paid for your riad or hotel. An afternoon trip doesn't mean a second night's accommodation.
- You want activities more than a bed. Our trips include a quad, buggy or camel ride, then dinner with a live show.
- You're travelling with children who sleep better in a familiar room.
- It's winter and you'd rather not spend a cold night in a tent.
- You want to keep things easy: no luggage, a fixed timetable and free pickup at your hotel or riad.
And when a camp night is the better choice: if you dream of waking up in the desert, watching the sunrise, or seeing the sunset in summer (when it comes after our trips have ended), an overnight stay is the only way.
How our Agafay afternoon trips work
Every trip starts with a free 3:00 PM pickup at your hotel or riad in Marrakech or the surrounding area (shared with other guests, or in a private car as paid VIP transport). Partner operators in Agafay run the activities. You do your ride in the late-afternoon light, dinner with a live show starts around 7:00 PM, and you're usually back in Marrakech around 8:00 PM. From about October to February, the sun sets while you're in the desert.
- Camel Ride + Dinner & Show: a 15-minute camel ride and dinner, about 4 hours, 200 MAD. The gentlest option, and the closest to a "camp evening".
- Quad + Camel + Dinner & Show: a quad ride of 40 minutes or 1h30 plus a camel ride and dinner, about 5 to 6 hours, 350 MAD with 40 minutes on the quad.
- Buggy + Camel + Dinner & Fire Show: a 1-hour buggy ride, a camel ride and dinner with a fire show, about 5 hours, 1400 MAD.
Vegetarian meals are possible; tell us about allergies in advance. You pay by cash on the day, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. Our dinner and show page explains the evening in more detail.
Agafay camp or the Sahara?
Agafay is a stone desert of rolling hills, not sand dunes. If you picture a camp among tall orange dunes, that's the Sahara, at Merzouga or Erg Chegaga, many hours' drive from Marrakech. Our guide to desert tours from Marrakech compares the options, and the Agafay Desert guide explains what the landscape is really like.
