Day trips and excursions from Marrakech: the 6 classics, honestly compared
Updated 29 October 2026 · 6 min read · By the Agafay Desert Tour team

The six classic day trips from Marrakech are the Agafay Desert (about 40 to 60 minutes away), the Ourika Valley (about 1 to 1.5 hours), Imlil and the High Atlas (about 1.5 to 2 hours), Ouzoud Falls (about 2.5 to 3 hours), Essaouira on the coast (about 2.5 to 3 hours) and Aït Ben Haddou (about 3 hours or more). The closer ones fit in half a day; the farther ones are long days with 5 hours or more on the road.
We're a booking service for Agafay Desert trips, and that's the only excursion on this list we sell. The rest is an honest overview, so you can pick the trips that suit you.

| Aït Ben Haddou | 3 h or more (about 200 km) | A famous earthen ksar over the High Atlas | History, film-set fans, mountain roads |
Drive times are approximate, without stops. Mountain roads are winding, so the real journey is often longer, and organised tours add photo and café stops.
1. Agafay Desert: the easiest half-day
The Agafay Desert is the closest of all: about 30 to 40 km south-west of Marrakech, 40 to 60 minutes by road. It's a stone desert of pale, rolling hills with the High Atlas on the horizon, snow-capped in winter. It isn't the Sahara, but it's the desert you can fit into an afternoon.
The trips we offer start with a 3:00 PM pickup, so your morning stays free for the city. You choose quad biking, a buggy ride or a camel ride, then have dinner with a live show from around 7:00 PM, and you're usually back in Marrakech around 8:00 PM. From about October to February the sun sets while you're there. Partner operators run the activities, pickup is free at 7 meeting points in Marrakech, and you pay by cash on the day.
- Camel Ride + Dinner & Show, about 4 hours, 200 MAD.
- Quad + Camel + Dinner & Show, about 5 to 6 hours, 350 MAD with 40 minutes on the quad.
- Buggy + Camel + Dinner & Fire Show, about 5 hours, 1400 MAD.
Who it suits: short stays, families, and anyone who wants a desert experience without a long drive. Our guide to getting to Agafay from Marrakech covers the pickup points.
2. Ourika Valley: green valley and waterfalls
The Ourika Valley runs into the High Atlas south of Marrakech. The road follows a river past villages and riverside cafés to Setti Fatma, about 60 km from the city and roughly 1 to 1.5 hours away. From there, a trail of roughly 1.5 to 2 hours climbs to a series of waterfalls, crossing the river in places, so good shoes help.
Who it suits: anyone wanting greenery and cooler mountain air without a long drive. It's popular, so it can be busy at weekends.
3. Imlil and the High Atlas: mountain walks
Imlil is a mountain village about 60 to 70 km south of Marrakech, around 1.5 to 2 hours by road. It's the trailhead for Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa at 4,167 metres. On a day trip you don't climb Toubkal; you walk between Berber villages, terraced fields and walnut groves. Local mountain guides can be arranged in the village, which is a good idea if you are not an experienced hiker.
Who it suits: walkers and anyone who loves mountain scenery. In winter the high villages can be cold and snowy, so check conditions.
4. Ouzoud Falls: Morocco's highest waterfalls
The Ouzoud waterfalls drop about 110 metres in several stages, and are usually described as the highest in Morocco. They're about 150 km north-east of Marrakech, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours each way. Paths lead down to the bottom of the falls and along the river, so wear shoes you can walk in.
Who it suits: nature lovers who don't mind a full day with 5 to 6 hours of driving. Water levels vary with the season.
5. Essaouira: the seaside town
Essaouira is a walled old town on the Atlantic coast, about 175 km west of Marrakech, around 2.5 to 3 hours by road. Buses also make the trip in about 3 hours. You can walk the sea walls, watch the fishing boats come into the harbour, eat fresh fish and browse the relaxed old-town streets. It's often windy, which is why the beach is known for kitesurfing rather than sunbathing.
Who it suits: anyone wanting a break from the city's heat and bustle. Many visitors prefer to stay a night, as the drive takes up a good part of a day trip.
6. Aït Ben Haddou: the famous ksar
Aït Ben Haddou is a fortified village of earthen buildings, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. It has appeared in many films, including Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator. It's about 200 km from Marrakech, on the far side of the High Atlas, reached over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at roughly 2,200 metres. Expect at least 3 hours each way on a winding mountain road.
Who it suits: history and film fans who enjoy road trips. It's a long day; it's also the first stop on most 2- and 3-day desert tours, so if you plan one of those, you'll see it then. Our guide to desert tours from Marrakech compares those longer trips.

How to choose your day trips
- You have 2 or 3 days in Marrakech: pick one short trip, like Agafay or the Ourika Valley, and keep the rest of your time for the city. An afternoon in Agafay leaves your morning free.
- You have 4 or 5 days: add one long day, such as Essaouira, Ouzoud or Aït Ben Haddou.
- You love the outdoors: Imlil for walking, Ouzoud for water, Agafay for quads, buggies and camels.
- You're travelling with young children: shorter drives are kinder. Agafay and Ourika are the easiest.
- It's high summer: mountain trips (Ourika, Imlil) are cooler. Desert trips are best in the late afternoon, which is when ours start.
Practical tips for any excursion
- Check what's included: transport, guide, entry fees, lunch and activities differ a lot between tours.
- Ask about pickup: hotel pickup in the medina's narrow streets often means meeting at a nearby point.
- Bring cash for drinks, tips and small purchases.
- Dress in layers: mountain and desert air changes quickly, especially in winter.
- Read the cancellation policy. Ours is free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
